Challenge
The challenge was to design a series of posters that captured the essence of the film and resonated with its intended audience.
Approach
Step 1: Immersing in the Story
To begin the creative process, I delved into the emotional core of the short film—its themes, characters, and tone. By analyzing the protagonist’s journey and the unique perspective of living without sound, I gathered visual references, moods, and symbolic elements that could capture the film’s intimate yet powerful atmosphere. This step was all about understanding the narrative from the inside out.
Step 2: Shaping the Visual Concept
With a deep understanding of the story, I began translating key emotions and narrative beats into visual language. I explored typography, composition, color palettes, and metaphors that could communicate silence, tension, connection, and identity. The goal was to define a concept that not only represented the film but also created intrigue and emotional resonance with its audience.
Some of the explored graphic elements were sound waves to suggest the protagonist’s relationship with sound, and the shape of a hearing aid subtly integrated into compositions to reflect his physical connection to hearing. Another key resource was the representation of sound through typography—using words that visually fade in and out, increasing or decreasing in size and weight to mirror moments of auditory perception and disconnection.
Step 3: Bringing the Poster to Life
In the final stage, we designed a cohesive sequence of posters that reflected the visual concept and evolved with the story. Each piece was crafted to evoke a specific mood while maintaining consistency across the series. Careful attention was given to layout, imagery, and negative space to suggest both what is seen and what is felt—mirroring the protagonist’s unique experience and drawing the viewer into his world.
